What we collect

This site collects very little information. If you subscribe to the build log, your email address is collected and stored by Substack, not directly by Hearth & Code. We do not operate our own email list or database.

We do not collect names, payment information, location data, or device identifiers. We do not run analytics software, advertising pixels, or behavioral tracking of any kind on this site.

How we use it

Your email address is used solely to send the Hearth & Code build log newsletter. We will not use it for advertising, sell it to third parties, or transfer it to any service not directly involved in delivering that newsletter.

Third-party services

This site uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

  • Substack — manages email subscriptions and newsletter delivery. Subscribing through this site redirects you to Substack's own subscription flow. Substack's privacy policy governs how your data is handled on their platform.
  • Google Fonts — typography is served from Google's CDN. Your browser makes a request to Google's servers to load fonts, which may include your IP address in Google's server logs. See Google's privacy policy for details. Self-hosting fonts is planned for a future update.
  • GitHub — linked repository pages are hosted and operated by GitHub. No personal data from this site is shared with GitHub as a result of visiting links on this page.

Cookies and tracking

This site does not set first-party cookies and does not use tracking pixels or analytics scripts. Substack's subscription flow, if you interact with it, is subject to Substack's own cookie policy. Google Fonts requests may be subject to Google's standard logging practices.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have rights including the right to access, correct, or delete personal data held about you. Because email subscriptions are managed entirely by Substack, exercising those rights is most direct through Substack's unsubscribe link (present in every newsletter issue) or through Substack's privacy controls.

For any data request specific to Hearth & Code, or if you have questions about what information we hold, contact hello@hearthandcode.dev. We will respond within 30 days.

Data retention

Email addresses on the Substack list are retained until you unsubscribe. Substack's data retention policies govern what happens on their platform after unsubscription.

California residents (CCPA / CPRA): We do not sell, share for cross-context behavioral advertising, or otherwise monetize personal information. You have the right to know what information we hold, to request its deletion, and to opt out of any future sale. To exercise these rights, contact us at the address in the Contact section below.

EEA / UK residents (GDPR / UK GDPR): The legal basis for processing your email address is your consent given at the point of subscription. You may withdraw that consent at any time by unsubscribing. If you have concerns about how your data is handled, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

Copyright

All content on this site — including but not limited to written text, design, code, layout, brand assets, and build log posts — is © 2026 Hearth & Code. All rights reserved unless otherwise stated.

Build log posts published on Substack are subject to this copyright. Brief quotation for non-commercial purposes — commentary, criticism, education — is permitted with clear attribution to Hearth & Code and a link to the original source. Reproduction, redistribution, or adaptation of substantial portions without written permission is not.

Trademarks and brand identity

Hearth & Code and H&C are brand names used exclusively by Hearth & Code. The name, logo, color system, typographic choices, and brand vocabulary (including but not limited to: the Hearth, the Forge, the Circle, Firetenders, the Build Log) are proprietary brand assets.

You may not use the Hearth & Code name, marks, or visual identity elements in any manner that implies endorsement, affiliation, partnership, or sponsorship without express written permission.

Source code

The source code for this site is proprietary. Code published in public repositories on GitHub is subject to the license specified in that repository. Where no license is specified, all rights are reserved.

Prohibition on AI training use

The text, design, and other content on this site and in the Hearth & Code build log may not be used — in whole or in part — to train, fine-tune, or otherwise develop machine learning or artificial intelligence models without express written permission. This applies to automated scraping, crawling, or systematic collection for that purpose.

Copyright takedown requests

If you believe content on this site infringes your copyright, please contact hello@hearthandcode.dev with:

  • A description of the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed.
  • The URL or specific location of the allegedly infringing content.
  • Your contact information.
  • A statement of good faith belief that the use is not authorized.

We will review and respond promptly.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising under these terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the United States.
